Sounds and Meaning – Group Music Therapy with people with profound learning difficulties and their carers Dr Anthi Agrotou (RMTh), 2002 Price £19.00 This is a documentary of some pioneer music therapy work, which takes place in an institution for profoundly learning disabled people. It focuses on a particular, innovating application of music therapy, whereby residents and carers participate together in therapeutic groups. A non-interventional and a specific use of music, based on the principles of psychodynamic thinking, facilitates both residents and carers towards emotional awakening and the creation of attachment bonds between them for the first time in their lives. As an example of this work, the film follows the history of a particular music therapy group, consisting of three residents, four carers and the music therapist. By using the original video-recorded excerpts of stable therapeutic work, taken over a four year period, the film traces the process of individuals from their complete isolation towards their newly-found exteriorisation of their inner world. Disabled bodies and inert souls move for the first time, when they discover the vitality and abilities which they had kept buried for years. People who have never spoken, who have hardly ever become attached to anyone, use the language of their sounds and their bodes, in order to act out their personal history. The facilitating means of this discovery is music, which is improvised in the here and now of the therapeutic sessions. The film is about people with profound learning difficulties. Nevertheless, the language of sound and body becomes for them a means of intelligent exchange with its own clear code. The process of music therapy proves the ability of these people to internalise and communicate a wide spectrum of their experiences. (The narration of this video is in Greek, and there are English sub-titles)
