The BRITISH JOURNAL OF MUSIC THERAPY

This Journal was begun in 1987 by a group of music therapists from the Association of Professional Music Therapists (APMT) and British Society for Music Therapy.  It replaced the 'old' small (A5) British Journal of Music Therapy published solely by the BSMT.  This 'old' publication has now turned into the BSMT Bulletin and contains news, reports, notices of new publications and meetings - a 'newsletter'.  The new Journal, which is produced jointly by the APMT and BSMT, contains articles written by music therapists on clinical work, theoretical issues and research and is published twice yearly.

Between 1987 and 1994 the Journal was known as the Journal of British Music Therapy.  This title was used to differentiate between this 'new' journal and the 'old' journal of the BSMT - a small publication,  replaced by the Journal of British Music Therapy and the BSMT Bulletin which contained the news items not now in the professional journal.  The Journal is the joint publication of both the BSMT and APMT.

However, it was realised that the original title British Journal of Music Therapy was best, as it was the intention to include papers from around the world - it was not 'British' music therapy.  So, in order to be accurate the title was changed in 1995 to the British Journal of Music Therapy.

The pages you can access from this page cover the contents of each volume of the Journal.  Two issues are published each year.  You will find a list of the complete contents including page numbers.

It is the policy of the BJMT to include a wide range of articles, reflecting the broad spectrum of ideas and approaches to music therapy in this country, as well as in other countries worldwide.  The BJMT accepts articles written by music therapists at all levels of experience, particularly by those who have not previously written about aspects of their work.  Articles from other disciplines are also welcomed, where there includes material that is pertinent to clinical practice.

Back issues can be purchased at £10.00 each, P & P 50p extra.  Contact the BSMT office to order them. Some issues are now out of print, but we can supply at the same cost, a good photocopied issue.  Only complete issues can be supplied, not copies of individual articles.

There is a page of GUIDELINES FOR CONTRIBUTORS - if you are thinking of sending a contribution to the Journal please read the guidelines beforehand.

There is also a page about the EDITORIAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE PANELS - the running of the Journal - and the people involved, and another on  SUBSCRIPTION - obtaining the Journal without full membership of the BSMT for overseas individuals only.  All music therapists who are members of the APMT automatically receive the Journal within their membership.  All BSMT members also receive the Journal within their membership.  CORPORATE SUBSCRIBERS must go through the BSMT.  Click here for application form.
