The MA in Music Therapy at Roehampton University may be taken full time for one year of part-time spread over tow to three years. Applicants need to give evidence of their readiness for postgraduate academic study together with demonstrable professional music skills. Practical experience with people with severe learning disabilities or mental illness is essential. Our approach is psychodynamically orientated. the programme emphasises the use of co-improvised music in both individual and group work as a medium in which clients may move towards increased well being. The acquisition of listening and observational skills is stressed. Students work throughout the year on exploration, analysis and extension of their skills in improvisation. Clinicians in related disciplines teach various areas of study including psychology, human communication and psychiatry. Students clinical work takes place over six months in two of a variety of hospitals, day centres, schools and nurseries and of individual and groupwork. Additional modules post-qualification are required to be awarded the MA. It has been designed to follow further clinical experience which will allow for an area of special interest to be identified on which to base the dissertation. Two weekends are provided to introduce students to appropriate research methods and these are run in conjunction with other arts and play therapies.
