The Postgraduate Diploma/MA in Music Therapy, Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama is a postgraduate training course leading to a diploma/MA in Music Therapy. It may be undertaken full-time or part-time. The course aims to equip students with the relevant clinical, professional and musical skills to practice music therapy in a variety of settings. Musical skills must be at degree or diploma level with training in one or two instruments, or voice. Qualifications in other areas will be considered where musical skills are at an appropriate level. Technical ability alone is not sufficient; an expressive ability is looked for. Maturity of personality and understanding of therapeutic practice is required. It is useful for the candidate to have gained experience in working with adults or children in different settings.Teaching is informed primarily by psychodynamic thinking. Therapeutic relationships will be understood in terms of unconscious feelings and thoughts which are expressed in more observable behaviours. Through observation and analysis of video, audio and written material, theories and practices of music therapy will be studied. Mother/infant observations are discussed in weekly seminars. Practical musical training, in the form of clinical improvisation and vocal studies will help students develop a therapeutic approach in their musical interactions. Clinical placements take place one day per week throughout the diploma, and specialists will provide teaching in the areas of work in which students may be employed subsequently. An experiential group runs throughout the course, assisting students reflect on their experience during the year. Students are required to take up personal therapy either prior to, or during the training. Gobeithir derparu gwybodaeth Gymraeg yn y dyfodol agos.
