The MA in Music Therapy at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge provides training in Music Therapy with the emphasis on clinical placements, and an introduction to various music therapy approaches. The course is approved by the HPC (Health Professions Council). The Course, from September 2006, is a two year full-time MA, which acts as a professional qualification and academic degree. The part-time route will take 3 years. Students are based partly at the University and partly at placements. At the end of this period, successful students can qualify as professional music therapists with a Postgraduate Diploma and seek employment as such. This course allows students to be responsible for their own personal development as therapists, with regular supervision and group support from the course. The training provides a background in the study of child development, learning disabilities, psychology, psychiatric disorders, psychoanalytic theories and related paramedical professions, e.g. Arts Therapies. Musicianship training develops skills in improvisation, voice production, percussion and composition. The unique system of block placements gives the students an experience of the working role of music therapists in many settings. There is a music therapy clinic on site and national and international research opportunities. This is a postgraduate course and applicants should normally have a degree of graduate diploma from a college or university. It is anticipated that most applications will have taken music as their main undergraduate subject. However, graduates of other disciplines who can also demonstrate an appropriate level of musicianship will be considered. Applicants should also have some practical experience with people with learning difficulties or mental illness and preferably both categories. The normal annual intake will be thirteen students.
